Chen added that the component shortage is likely to continue through at least one quarter of this year. He said: "This is not only about chips. There is a close relationship in logistics and transportation, including in the competition for containers and fleets."
 
Acer, the world's fifth-largest PC maker, has a market share of just 7 percent, with shipments up 23 percent last year. According to IDC, the overall PC industry grew by 13%, its performance since 2010.
 
In the second half of last year, the PC industry began to suffer from a shortage of various components, from WiFi and power management chips to image sensors, audio-related components and displays, to various fields. Earlier this year, the auto industry's demand for more chips further strained supply.
 
Other major PC makers, including U.S. vendors HP and Dell, are also vying for more chips to maintain their growth momentum.

Taiwan-based display maker Qunchuang Optoelectronics (Innolux), a supplier of Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Acer, estimates that the display supply constraints will continue at least until the end of the year because of strong demand for laptops. Components used to make displays also remain in short supply, the company said.
 
"Taiwan's key components such as polarizers, integrated circuits (integrated circuits), glass and even water are in short supply," Yang, president of Qunchuang Optoelectronics, said at an investor conference in Taipei on Wednesday."
